News April 28, 2021

Sunderland face Plymouth Argyle at Home Park this weekend as they go head to head in League One.

Tom Pearce, Sunderland Picks Predictor (@tompearce97)

This will be the 31st meeting between the two sides, with the first coming in 1912 in the FA Cup, in which Sunderland came out 3-1 winners.

The Black Cats have a decent record against Plymouth in recent times, however, they lost 2-1 in the reverse fixture.

How will this weekends game play out, though?

Sunderland Form

The Black Cats were beaten by Blackpool by a 1-0 score-line for the second time in 10 days on Tuesday night.

Lee Johnson’s side have now failed to win any of their last six, picking up just two points from a possible 18. That means they now sit bottom of the form table.

They’ve also struggled on the road recently, failing to win in any of their last four away games with two wins and two draws.

Plymouth Argyle Form

Plymouth were beaten by Sunderland’s play-off competitors, Oxford United, as they lost 3-1 away last Saturday.

The Pilgrims aren’t exactly in great form either as they have accumulated just four points from their last six games. That means they currently find themselves in 22nd in the form table.

They have lost each of their last two home games as well, with the last game at Home Park finishing 6-0 to Charlton.

Our Picks For Sunderland Picks – Plymouth Argyle v Sunderland

In Focus

1. Will Sunderland score in the first half? Yes

The Black Cats obviously failed to score last time out, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them score in the opening 45 this weekend.

Johnson’s side have now scored in the first period in 59% of their away games this campaign.

As well as that, Plymouth have conceded 14 goals from 22, which is an average of 0.64 goals against per first period at home.

2. Will Sunderland score in the second half? Yes

The Black Cats have scored just one goal in the closing 45 minutes in their last five games, however, that could change this weekend.

With 17 goals scored from 22, they are currently averaging 0.77 goals scored per second half on the road.

The thing is, Plymouth have failed to keep a clean sheet in the second period in 55% of their home games this season.

3. How many goals will Sunderland score? 2

Sunderland have managed to score just the two goals in just one of their last five games but Plymouth’s defensive record isn’t great.

It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if The Black Cats score exactly two, though, as they have done so in 41% of their away games.

Meanwhile, the hosts have conceded 36 goals from 22 matches at Home Park, which is an average of 1.64 goals against per home game.

4. Will Charlie Wyke score? Yes

The forward had three shots on target against Blackpool on Tuesday, but he just couldn’t beat Chris Maxwell.

He has now scored 25 goals in League One this campaign, with his last couple coming in the 3-3 draw with Accrington Stanley.

He doesn’t have the best record against Plymouth, though, scoring just one goal in eight appearances against them.

5. Will Aiden McGeady assist a goal? Yes

Despite not setting up a teammate for a goal last time out, he is still at the top of the League One assists table.

The winger has 15 assists to his name this campaign, with all but one of them coming in the league.

Whilst he does have a good goal-scoring record against Plymouth, with two in three, he has never registered an assist against them.

6. How many shots on target will Sunderland have? 4+

The Black Cats had 13 shots against Blackpool on Tuesday, testing Chris Maxwell with five of them.

They have now had 215 shots on target this season, which is an average of 4.89 shots on goal per game.

Michael Cooper has played every minute between the sticks for Plymouth this campaign.

In his 44 league appearances, he has faced 211 attempts on his goal. That’s an average of 4.79 shots on target against per 90.

Quickfire

  • How many shots on target will Charlie Wyke have? 0
  • How many tackles will Max Power make? 1
  • How many saves will Lee Burge make? 2
  • Will Sunderland concede a goal? No
