News April 26, 2021

Sunderland welcome Blackpool to the Stadium of Light this weekend as they go head to head in League One.

Tom Pearce, Sunderland Picks Predictor (@tompearce97)

This will be the 63rd meeting between the two sides, with the first coming in 1930, in which Blackpool came out 4-2 winners.

The Black Cats don’t have the best recent record against The Tangerines as they have failed to beat them in their last three matches.

That includes the reverse fixture, which happened earlier this month, where Blackpool came out 1-0 winners.

Sunderland Form

It was a whirlwind of emotions for Sunderland at the weekend as they drew 3-3 to Accrington Stanley at home.

Lee Johnson’s side have failed to win in any of their last six games, picking up just three points from a possible 18. They now find themselves sitting in 22nd in the form.

They’ve also failed to win in their last two on home soil and have won just one in their last four at the Stadium of Light.

Blackpool Form

The Tangerines lost two in the matter of a few days as their great form came to an end last week, losing 1-0 at home to Shrewsbury last time out.

They have won just two of their last six matches and have accumulated eight points from those matches. That means they currently sit in 12th place in the form table.

Blackpool have also failed to win in their last couple of away games, however, they won the previous five games on the road.

Our Picks For Sunderland Picks – Sunderland V Blackpool

In Focus

1. Will Sunderland score in the first half? Yes

Charlie Wyke put his side two goals to the good after 11 minutes against Accrington at the weekend.

It wasn’t a surprise either, as The Black Cats have scored in the first half in 57% of their home games this campaign.

However, it certainly won’t be an easy task. That’s because Blackpool have conceded just seven from 21, averaging 0.33 goals against per first period on the road.

2 . Will Sunderland score in the second half? No

Johnson’s side scored in both halves at the weekend, as Max Power had looked to have bagged the winner in the 83rd minute.

The Black Cats have now scored 14 from 17, which is an average of just 0.67 goals scored per second half at home.

As well as that, Blackpool have conceded in the second period in 44% of their away games this season.

3. How many goals will Sunderland score? 1

Three goals should have been enough to win the game on Saturday, and it would have been but for a fantastic Sean McConville free-kick.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see them score just the one either, as they have done so in 62% of their home games this campaign.

Blackpool also have a very good defensive record this season, with no either team conceding fewer than them.

They have kept eight clean sheets and conceded just 19 goals from 21 matches. That’s an average of 0.9 goals against per away game.

4. Will Charlie Wyke score? Yes

As previously mentioned, the forward scored both of Sunderland’s opening two goals at the weekend.

Those were his 28th and 29th goals of the season, with 25 of them coming in the league.

Wyke does have an okay record against Blackpool, though, having scored two goals in his previous six appearances against them.

5. Will Aiden McGeady assist a goal? Yes

Despite playing 14 games fewer than George Honeyman in second, Aiden McGeady has the most assists in League One this campaign.

He set up Wyke for one of his goals at the weekend, which meant he has now registered 14 assists in the league.

This will be the fourth time the winger will have come up against Blackpool, having set up a teammate for a goal just once in his previous three against them.

6. Will Charlie Wyke score in the first half? Yes

As previously spoken about, it’s more likely that Sunderland will score in the first half rather than the second.

Both of Wyke’s goals on Saturday came in the opening 45 minutes as well and it wasn’t really a surprise.

That’s due to the fact that he has scored 17 of his 25 league goals in the first half this campaign.

  • Will Lynden Gooch assist a goal? No
  • How many shots on target will Jordan Jones have? 1
  • How many tackles will Josh Scowen make? 2
  • How many saves will Lee Burge make? 4+
